History

HAL Laboratory helped program Nintendo's Tennis, a Famicom game of singles and doubles from 1984 already. Mario umpires from the net post, and serve, volley, and smash depend on timing more than on a season's stats.

The NES cart came from that design. A doubles partner covers the far side of one court, and nothing like a tournament calendar wraps the match.

A separate handheld edition followed later. Mario's chair and the simple swing are what that NES cartridge copies from the Famicom original.
