History

Nintendo sets falling blocks against scenes from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Donkey Kong in Tetris DS. The cartridge arrived in 2006 with several ways to play. Touch push, versus matches, and mission lists sit beside a standard well.

Touch push lets the stylus shove a piece rather than only rotating it with buttons. Versus mode throws your clears at another player. Mission mode asks for particular shapes and timings instead of an endless stack.

A Mario backdrop, a Zelda scene, a Metroid corridor, or Donkey Kong girders can sit behind the same pieces. The tetrominoes do not change shape when the scenery changes. The mode you picked, and the music around the well, is what changes.

This is not the Game Boy version of Tetris. Nintendo built new modes around familiar series art. A filled standard well still ends the run.
