History

Unlicensed carts and a competitive mode distinguish Tetris (Tengen), the NES puzzle Tengen shipped under Atari Games' label. Two players can race the same well, a feature Nintendo's licensed cartridge did not treat as the point.

Tengen was forced to pull the cart from stores after the rights fight. Nintendo won the case in 1989, and its own licensed cartridge stayed on shelves while the Tengen boards were withdrawn.

The competitive mode and the unlicensed label are why this version is remembered separately. Pajitnov's falling pieces are the shared puzzle, and the lawsuit is this cart's own history.
