  • 3rd generation

History

Trevor Belmont can take Sypha, Grant, or Alucard onto branching roads in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. The pirate's climb, the mage's spell, and the dhampir's attack rewrite a corridor the whip alone would fail.

Konami forks the map so a chosen partner locks some stairs and opens others. The clock tower and the marsh are not a single mandatory march, which is the expansion beyond the first castle.

The game arrived in 1989 and is often treated as the peak of the 8-bit entries. Trevor's whip remains the spine, and the partner is what makes this late NES Castlevania wider than a straight ascent.
