History

Konami lets a future protagonist drink enemy souls in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, the 2003 castle you map at your own pace. Players often set it beside Symphony of the Night because both reward wandering instead of a stage select.

Soma Cruz steals a soul and turns it into a bullet, a summon, or a stat change. The 2035 castle is Dracula's power in a new host, and the map fills only where you choose to walk.

A Wii U reissue later carried this same soul-collecting castle. The backtracking, not a linear whip march, is why the Symphony comparison sticks.
