Medusa heads drift across the stairs while Simon Belmont's whip cracks in Castlevania. Candles drop hearts and holy water, and Dracula's castle leaves very little room for a sloppy landing.
Konami's first castle in this line sets the whip, the stairs, and the boss rooms as the language later games quote. Simon's advance is a straight assault, not a countryside search.
The game arrived in 1986 and starts Konami's long run on Nintendo hardware. The whip and the castle, with Simon at the door, are the beginning.
