History

Purple objects give the aliens their harvest in The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants, so Bart has to disguise them before the count is finished. Acclaim's first licensed Simpsons cartridge sends him through Springfield ahead of the later Bart games.

Family members and shop props become tools for covering the purple targets on each street. Maggie, Lisa, and the rest of the household are part of that scavenger hunt rather than a fighting roster.

The NES release arrived in 1991, with the space-mutant plot already on the box. Later Bart cartridges are separate licenses, not extra stages of this disguise hunt.
