Sunsoft followed its own Batman cartridge with Batman: Return of the Joker, a fast NES sequel that does not retell the film Batman Returns. The Joker is the villain on the box, and the stages stay in Sunsoft's demanding style.
Walls, pits, and quick enemy patterns ask for the same sharp timing as the studio's earlier Batman cart. The 1991 release stands in that line, beside the first Sunsoft Batman, rather than beside a movie-script adaptation.
A Game Boy edition exists as well, but the NES board is the one that continues Sunsoft's console Batman. Batman Returns, the film, is a different story with a different villain focus and no claim on these stages.
