History

Carrier landings decide the sortie in Top Gun (1987), Konami's jet game taken from the Tom Cruise film. Dogfights can go well and the mission still fails if the approach to the deck is missed.

The F-14 has to match the carrier's speed and height in that landing window. A bad angle dumps the plane, and the successful air combat before it does not save the run.

Konami built the notoriety of those approaches into the NES design on purpose. The film's call signs and carrier setting are the wrapper around a landing that many players remember better than the missiles.
