Square opened its line with Final Fantasy, the 1987 NES quest in which four jobs cross a cursed world through menu-driven battles. Garland's kidnapping of Princess Sara starts the search for darkened crystals.
A party of fighters, thieves, black mages, and white mages fights from a command list rather than from an action stick. Chaos and a time loop wait once the four crystals are restored, and that structure became the template later numbered entries kept rewriting.
Game Boy Advance and Wii releases later carried this same first quest. Every sequel assumes this job party and this crystal crisis already happened.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
