History

Cardboard boxes hide Solid Snake in Metal Gear, Hideo Kojima's sneaking mission that began on the MSX2 rather than as a straight shooter. Outer Heaven's guards raise an alert if they see him, and the transceiver delivers the next order.

Kojima's MSX2 game dates to 1987, with the cardboard box, the card keys, and the alarm as the tools. Big Boss's frequency on the transceiver is the story's turn.

The NES version changes maps and bosses, and Kojima has distanced himself from that port. Snake and Outer Heaven begin on the MSX2, and the NES board is a different layout of the sneak.
