History

Square's first SaGa game reached the West as The Final Fantasy Legend. Japan called it Makai Toushi SaGa, the Final Fantasy wording was Western branding, and the Game Boy release dates to 1989.

A party climbs a tower of worlds, a monster member changes by eating foes, and a human buys better steel. The creator waiting at the top closes that first SaGa pilgrimage.

Makai Toushi SaGa is the name on the Japanese box. The Final Fantasy wording on Western shelves does not turn the cart into a numbered Final Fantasy.
