Argonaut and Nintendo finished Starfox 2 for the Super Nintendo in the mid-1990s, then shelved it. A strategic map lets the Arwing intercept invading forces, which already differs from the first game's strict corridor choice.
The official release finally came in 2017 on the Super NES Classic Edition. Until that plug-and-play box, the finished cartridge did not have a wide public launch.
Fox still leads, and the shelved map is the reason historians separate this follow-up from the original Super FX trenches. The Classic Edition is how most players finally flew that map.
