History

Richard Garriott opens Ultima VII: The Black Gate on a murder beside a moongate in Britannia. Origin shipped that mouse-driven PC chapter in 1992, and the Super Nintendo game using the subtitle is a much simpler adaptation.

On the computer the Avatar drags crates, bakes bread, and walks a continuous map while the Fellowship spreads. The console edition compresses that simulation into menus, so conversation and combat lose the freedom of the mouse cursor.

The Black Gate conspiracy remains the threat both versions name. Garriott's PC world is the original chapter, and the Super Nintendo cart is a reduced retelling of the same Fellowship plot.
