Ryu Hayabusa clings to walls between cinema scenes in Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo's NES action that cuts to a story after each stage. The cling, the slash, and the wind scroll of those cutscenes became the trilogy's language.
Jaquio's cult and the statues Ryu climbs are the first game's obstacles. A knocked-down Ryu restarts the climb with little mercy, which is why the wall grip matters.
