Boost blocks drawn on the GamePad set New Super Mario Bros. U apart from earlier side-scrollers. Nintendo's 2012 platformer lets a second player tap those blocks when the person holding the pad wants to help.
Mario, Luigi, and the Toads still run Acorn Plains toward Peach's stolen castle, with the boost squares appearing only where the pad player places them. A mis-timed block can lift a jumper onto a ledge or shove him into a Spiny.
Those GamePad blocks are the Wii U idea. The Switch package that adds New Super Luigi U is a different release, not this game.
